Your Secure Onboarding Guide for Trezor Hardware Wallets

Welcome

Thank you for choosing Trezor. If you're here, you’ve likely just received your Trezor hardware wallet or are preparing to use one to secure your cryptocurrencies. Trezor.io/Start is your trusted official guide—built by SatoshiLabs—to safely initialize your device, install firmware and software, and make sure all security measures are correctly in place. This will ensure your private keys stay offline and under your sole control.

What is Trezor.io/Start?

This is the official setup portal provided by the creators of Trezor. It’s more than just a download link—it is a comprehensive, step‑by‑step onboarding experience. It guides you through selecting your device model, installing the Trezor Suite software, creating or recovering your wallet, establishing backups, setting up PINs and passphrases, and understanding best security practices. Using this guide helps you avoid counterfeit firmware or software, phishing sites, and common setup mistakes.

What You’ll Need Before You Begin

Step‑by‑Step Setup Guide

  1. Visit the Official Page: Open your browser and go to https://trezor.io/start. Double check the URL and ensure you see the secure HTTPS connection.
  2. Select Your Device Model: Choose either Trezor Model One or Model T; instructions will adapt depending on which device you have.
  3. Download Trezor Suite: Download the official Suite app (for Windows, macOS, or Linux) or opt for the browser‑based version if supported. This will serve as your control center for managing accounts, firmware, and transactions.
  4. Connect Your Device: Plug in your Trezor via the USB port. The Suite app will detect your device and begin device verification steps.
  5. Install or Update Firmware: If firmware is not present or is outdated, the Suite will guide you to install the latest version. Firmware is cryptographically signed to ensure authenticity.
  6. Create or Recover Wallet: You’ll be given the choice to create a brand new wallet or recover using an existing recovery seed. If new, Trezor will generate a 12‑ or 24‑word seed phrase for you. If recovering, you’ll enter your existing seed words.
  7. Backup the Recovery Seed: Write your recovery seed down on the included seed cards. Store that backup in a safe, offline place. This seed is your only way to restore access if you lose the hardware device.
  8. Set PIN & Optional Passphrase: Choose a strong PIN to protect your device. For added security or privacy, you may also enable a passphrase (an extra word or phrase) to hide or protect certain wallet data.
  9. Finalize Setup & Explore: Once security settings are in place, you can create accounts for different cryptocurrencies in the Suite, view balances, send/receive transactions, and optionally explore advanced features like staking, exchanges or integrations with other wallet tools.

Security Principles to Keep in Mind

Common Questions

Is this page safe?

Yes. This is the only recommended setup flow by SatoshiLabs. It ensures downloads are authentic, firmware is verified, and your setup process is protected against common crypto threats. Always check you’re on the correct domain trezor.io.

What if I already have a recovery seed from another device?

You can choose “Recover Wallet” during setup. Enter your seed carefully, with correct word order and spelling, and then set your new PIN. Your wallet structure will be restored automatically.

What happens if I lose my Trezor device?

If your device is lost, stolen, or broken, as long as you have your recovery seed stored securely, you can regain access to your funds on a new device. Without that seed, the funds are unrecoverable.

Can I skip firmware updates?

No. Firmware updates often include critical security patches. The Suite will guide you to update before allowing normal use.

After Setup: What You Can Do
